7 Easy tips to ease into healthy eating!

It’s always hard to start jumping in to eat better. There’s so many fad diets and temptations, but once you start eating better, it gets so much easier to keep it up. Healthy food isn’t just eating salads and veggies all the time, there are so many great things that can fill you up. As someone who’s trying to work on eating better, here are a few of my tips to help you eat better!

If you tend to snack, snack on cleaner foods

If you like eating snacks (much like me) it’s easy to sit and eat a whole bag of chips. Snack foods like those contain empty calories, so it’s easy to eat those and still be hungry. If you’re craving a snack one day, eat snacks like these:

  • Almonds
  • Veggies (I LOVE eating them with hummus)
  • Fruit
  • Edamame
  • Hard boiled eggs
  • String cheese (or any cheese)
  • Yogurt

These snacks are easy to fill you up and control hunger until you eat a meal. Sometimes I’ll eat some of these for breakfast and will be full until I eat a meal!


You’ve heard it all before, to drink more water, but it does help. Drinking water helps control hunger and has so many other health benefits. Plus, drinking more water helps you cut out drinks that have a lot of added sugars! An easy way to start drinking more water is to order a water instead of a soda when you’re out to dinner! Another good thing I like to do is to use a reusable 24 oz. water bottle to drink my water, and fill it up once you’re finished.

Substitute dairy milk for nut milk

If you’re making smoothies, eating cereal, or having coffee (no I do not drink any milk for fun) instead of putting any dairy cream or dairy milk, a healthier alternative is to put any nut milk as a substitute for dairy. I started substituting cream for almond milk in my coffee for a while now, and I cannot drink coffee with cream anymore. I personally find that almond milk is so much better than dairy milk and it does not make me feel gross! Nut milk tends to have more calcium and vitamins over dairy milk, so it’s a lot better for you!

Eat low-carb

Yes, I said LOW carb, not NO carb. If you had to tell me to give up carbs, I think I’d cry. My favorite low-carb alternatives are making deli meat and cheese roll-ups instead of using sandwich bread and using lettuce for wraps and burgers instead of bread. Cauliflower rice is also one of my favorite alternatives too! Low carb meals also contain a lot of complex carbs which are easier to digest! If you want carbs, eat whole grains

So you’re eating low carb and you’re craving carbs now. So when you do want carbs, PLEASE go for whole grains. These are:

  • Brown rice
  • Whole grain pasta (or pasta made with brown rice or veggies)
  • Whole grain bread
  • Quinoa
  • Oats
  • Corn

Again, like complex carbs, whole grains are easier to digest, and keep you full longer! You can enjoy all of your favorite pasta dishes and sandwiches by opting for whole grains instead of white bread! Whole grains are also packed with fiber too, compared to normal white breads.

Make a salad with a variety of greens, not iceberg lettuce

I know, a lot of people that eat salads thinks that they’re all rabbit food, but honestly, salads don’t have to be bad, you just need to use the right type of lettuce. If you use lots of iceberg lettuce, your salad will not have any nutritional value, and it will taste like water. Instead, use a variety of greens such as:

  • Spinach
  • Kale
  • Cabbage
  • Arugula
  • Romaine lettuce
  • Butter lettuce
  • Chard

A lot of these greens are found in organic salad packs which you can eat too! I get mine at Jewel or other grocery stores. Another good pro tip for salad making is to add good amounts of protein and toppings to salads, like chicken, avocado, shrimp, steak, cheese and veggies; you won’t get full off just leaves, trust me! Also, go light on the dressing too, a little goes a long way.

Eat leaner proteins

A good way to start eating healthy is to op for lean meats. Lean meats are typically chicken, turkey, fish, lean beef, and shellfish. You have to be careful with beef though, since you need to get beef that has a higher lean to fat percentage. Chicken, turkey, salmon, and shrimp are some of the best lean proteins to eat. I love to eat meals like salmon with brown rice and veggies, turkey burgers, anything with shrimp, and you can put these proteins in any salad!

These are my easy tips to start to ease into healthy eating! Again, once you get started, it keeps getting easier. Eating healthier like this definitely pays off, and it helps you feel better over eating Mcdonald’s! You don’t have to diet to eat well like this, diets suck. Some of them are even bad for you because they lack nutritional value. A good tip is to just keep making smart choices and it’ll become easier for you to eat better.
