The Importance of Self Love

During life, we learn so many lessons; we learn and grow every single day. We learn from parents, teachers, mentors, and even our peers. The one lesson that is sometimes not taught is to love yourself. I know, it’s cheesy to see “self love” posts all the time, but once you start applying it to your life, your happiness will significantly increase.

Reminder: The minute you start to love yourself, is the same minute that you see your worth

Everyone has their struggles, and sometimes finding the strength to love yourself is a really big struggle. Sometimes you have rough days and you might not like yourself when you have your bad days. I know, I’ve been there. You have to remind yourself on your bad days that you are stronger than you think you are. Self love comes with strength.

With that being said, self love also comes with positive talk to yourself. I know social media is a HUGE influence on negative body image and negative self worth. It’s hard to look at a picture of someone you think is flawless and then look at yourself and think that you’re ugly. But the thing is, the more negative thoughts about yourself that you put in your mind, the harder it is to love yourself.

One of the first steps to loving yourself is to stop talking to yourself negatively. If you keep talking about yourself negatively, then you won’t find anything positive that you can say about yourself. Everyone has positive and negative traits, and another thing to work on is to realize your negative traits and work on improving them so you can improve yourself. Working on things that improve yourself and your quality of life is one of the key steps to start working on loving yourself. Once you start talking about yourself positively, you will have more motivation and you will feel so much better about yourself.

Another key portion of self love is to have the strength to cut out what’s not benefitting your growth and happiness. Yes this means cutting out jobs, organizations, people, relationships, ANYTHING and ANYONE that brings NEGATIVITY in your life. With self love, it is important for you to be strong enough to say to myself, “I need to walk away from this person/thing that’s bringing me negativity”. This is called putting yourself first, and here’s my other post about that here.

Once you start to love yourself, you end up learning and earning what you deserve. You don’t settle for anything less and your outlook on life and presence improves. You become happier and more positive. Remember, when you put in positive vibes, positive vibes come back to you.

If you struggle with self love, here are ways that this process will become easier for you:

  • As stated before, stop talking about yourself negatively
  • Write down five things that you love about yourself
  • Surround yourself with people who motivate you and lift you up
  • Cut out anything and anyone that brings negativity to your life
  • Write down 5 traits that you don’t like about yourself and find out ways that you can improve them
  • Have a more positive outlook on life
  • Smile more and be happy!
  • Find inspirational quotes you like and put them in your room or post them
  • Most importantly, have faith in yourself. Tell yourself you CAN instead of you cant

Finding self love within yourself does not happen overnight, it takes time. The more you take time with yourself, the easier it is to love yourself. You can love everyone in the world, but if you don’t love yourself, you’re not living your life for yourself.

Another reminder, you won’t be able to love anyone else until you learn to love yourself

In the end, you’ll end up with yourself anyway, so take some time and tell yourself that you are one amazing individual. Remember, God put you on this earth for a reason. Yes, YOU. Never settle for less and hold yourself to a high standard, and you will become very happy!
